Continuing professional development (CPD)
Online learning for health professionals
Online learning provides a flexible training option which enables health professionals to develop new skills when and where required at a pace that suits them. Online learning is also a cost effective option for those who do not have the time to attend events and courses away from home.
Nurses
The Vision Initiative, working in partnership with the Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) and the Australian Practice Nurses Federation (APNA), has developed two eye health and vision care online learning courses. Both courses are available to all nurses registered with these professional organisations.
The self-directed learning tutorials are designed to provide nurses and midwives with best practice learning on eye health and vision care that can then be applied in every day nursing practice. Each module is accredited by the professional association and includes an assessment. On completion the participating nurse will earn Continued Professional Development (CPD) points.
Pharmacists
Since 2004 the Vision Initiative has worked in partnership with the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) to provide the most up to date information on eye health and vision care to Victorian pharmacists.
Each year a series of eye health education topics are developed, accredited and presented by local ophthalmologists and optometrists as part of the PSA CPD program.

Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations
In 2007 the Vision Initiative received funding from the Victorian Department of Health to develop and deliver a culturally appropriate eye health training resource for Aboriginal Health Workers in partnership with the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO).
The education module titled HLTAHW417A Provide information and strategies in eye health is offered through Certificate IV in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care.
