Australian Nursing Federation (ANF)
Nurses and midwives make up the largest health professional group in the world and make a positive and lasting contribution not only to the people they care for, but to the whole community.
The health reform and workforce redesign of the future focuses on the role of nurses and a better understanding of the value nurses add to the health system. Education is a necessary component of this reform. To encourage the uptake of education by members, the Australian Nursing Federation has launched online education for nurses and midwives. This is particularly useful for remote and rural nurses.
The Vision Initiative members in collaboration with the ANF have developed an online eye health module available to the current membership of 170,000 nurses. This information ensures that nurses are aware of:
- common causes of vision loss in the community
- the risk factors
- how to detect vision loss
- descriptions of the latest treatments available.
Referral pathways and accessing low vision services are included.
Nurses work in a variety of settings and are poised to take the simple steps to detect the 75 per cent of vision loss that can be avoided or treated with early detection.
The Vision Care module takes 2 hours to complete and it is accredited by the ANF providing CPD points.
