Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA)
Practice nurses work in general practitioner (GP) practices providing assessment, screening, treatment care and education to patients from all sections of the community. They are a growing and vital component to the primary health care team, providing a holistic approach to care. Knowledge of eye health and awareness of the need for vision care is of particular importance when nurses are seeing patients with diabetes, depression, the elderly and those in high risk groups for eye disease.
The effects of vision loss can devastate the lives of the people that it affects. The good news is 75 per cent of vision loss can be prevented or treated if detected early and the practice nurse is well positioned to promote the importance of regular eye examinations.
The Australian Practice Nurses Association (APNA) provides an online learning module titled An Introduction to Eyes.
The module on eyes has been developed to ensure that practice nurses are aware of:
- common causes of vision loss
- risk factors
- how to detect vision loss
- latest treatments available.
Referral pathways and accessing low vision services are included.
CPD points are achieved following successful completion and assessment of the learning. The Vision Initiative has worked with APNA to ensure that all practice nurses have the opportunity to provide best practice care to their clients.
