Eye health pilot projects
On Thursday 10 October 2013 (World Sight Day), Vision 2020 Australia, the Minister for Health, the Hon David Davis MLC and the Vision Initiative partners officially launched the new Vision Initiative pilot projects.
The tailored health promotion initiatives will deliver concentrated activity in Darebin, Greater Geelong, Greater Shepparton and Latrobe, to reduce avoidable blindness and vision loss in their communities.
Residents of these four selected local government areas have been identified as more at-risk of blindness and vision loss due to a higher proportion of risk factors in the community. These risk factors include a high proportion of people aged over 40, smokers, people with diabetes and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as a large number of people who do not have regular eye tests.
The Vision Initiative pilot projects aim to strengthen relations between the health and eye health sector in these areas to increase the number of at-risk people having regular eye tests and being referred to low vision and rehabilitation services.
Activity will be implemented through health services, media and local community organisations to target those people at risk of eye disease.
The Vision Initiative is currently recruiting pharmacists, GPs, optometrists and ophthalmologists working in Darebin, Greater Geelong, Greater Shepparton and Latrobe to take part in the pilot project.
Activities will be implemented from the last quarter of 2013 until early 2015.
