Eye Care for Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander People with Diabetes
Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (EMPHN) is working with the Indigenous Eye Health Unit at Melbourne University to facilitate better eye health outcomes for Aboriginal Communities.
Part of this work has been the development of an action plan by the Eastern Metropolitan Melbourne Aboriginal Eye Health Regional Stakeholder Group. This is made up of Aboriginal Community members and eye health service providers across the eastern metropolitan region.
EMPHN is also working with the North and West Melbourne Indigenous Eye Health Stakeholder Group in the northern part of the EMPHN region.
These stakeholder groups are working towards better communication of eye health services to Aboriginal communities, clearer and more coordinated referral paths, providing better eye health information and identifying service gaps.
The Indigenous Eye Health Unit has developed eye health resources to provide greater awareness of eye health issues for Aboriginal communities and to provide better access to treatment and better preventative care.
Brochures are also available which were developed by the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation.
