Opening the gates on farmers health

The inaugural National Centre for Farmer Health Conference was held in Hamilton from 11-13 October. The diverse three day event highlighted the facts and figures around farmer health and the specific issues that are faced by rural communities, with presentations delivered by international and national experts. Over 150 delegates attended the conference and contributed to the development of an outcome document titled Charter for Farmer Health.
The Vision Initiative coordinated a shared stand with Glaucoma Australia and delivered a presentation to conference attendees about the importance of eye health and vision care in rural communities. Information was also distributed as satchel inserts.
Glaucoma Australia delivered a poster presentation to attendees highlighting statistics around glaucoma and the support available.
In addition, to celebrate World Sight Day on 14 October, an exciting local media event was organised with the Hamilton Spectator newspaper. Mayor Councillor Marcus Rentsch participated in an eye examination at a local optometrist to highlight the importance of regular preventive eye tests, especially for those aged over 40 years.
