The Vision Initiative, partnering with Glaucoma Australia and Guide Dogs Victoria, exhibited and held a workshop at CAREX 2011, Melbourne.

CAREX is one of Australia’s premier health and aged care expos, attracting a diverse range of health professionals including nurses, aged care workers and occupational therapists.

Robyn Wallace, the Vision Initiative Coordinator and Natasha Sikman, Orthoptist from Guide Dogs Victoria, hosted a workshop to an audience of over 30 health professionals.

Topics covered the importance of regular eye examinations for the prevention of eye disease, common causes of vision loss in Australia and where to go for an eye test.

Natasha spoke about the services that are available for those with low vision, showing how people with vision loss can be assisted to remain independent.

The Vision Initiative website, which was showcased on a large screen, also attracted a great deal of interest from health professionals.

“The workshop was a real success as participants were able to gain eye health knowledge that will help them provide better care for their clients,” said Robyn.

“We were able to educate participants about the eye health and vision care sector, outlining professional roles and referral pathways.”
